The Annapurna Circuit Trek in Nepal is the one of the oldest trekking routes. The trail is the most popular trekking route of Nepal alongside trekking routes like Everest Base Camp Trek route and Annapurna Base Camp trek route. The classical Annapurna Circuit Trek used to take more than 19 to 21 days to complete. However, the construction of roads in the trekking trail has curtailed the total number of trekking days. Nowadays, it is possible to complete the Annapurna Circuit Trek in less than 14 days. If you want to experience the classical route then you can book our Annapurna Circuit Classical Trek package. The shortest itinerary of Tilicho Lake Trek in Nepal is the 7-8 Days Tilicho Lake Trek itinerary. The trek starts in Chame and ends in the same place. If the weather is right and if you take the risk of altitude sickness then traveling to Manang directly using a four-wheel jeep also saves 2 days. However, it is not highly recommended because of the threat of altitude sickness. Traveling to high altitude places directly from low altitude has more threats of getting AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). If you choose to do the shortest trek to Tilicho Lake then you will miss out on the activity of crossing the famous Thorong La Pass (5416 m). The best way to explore both Mustang region and Manang region including the hike to the world’s highest situated lake is to do the Tilicho Lake Annapurna Circuit Trek.

The most arduous section of the Tilicho Lake Annapurna Circuit Trek is the section between Manang and Tilicho Lake. Trekkers have to trek uphill and downhill on a rocky rugged trail. There are many landslides risky areas and risk of falling stones is very high while trekking to Tilicho Lake especially after crossing Siri Kharka. On this section, trekkers can visit the 500 years old Tara monastery too. This is one of the highlights of this day. There are no tea houses or lodges on the shores of Tilicho Lake (4919 m). Therefore, trekkers have to hike from Tilicho Base Camp to lake and return again to base camp. The scenery seen during the trek helps trekkers to forget all the tiredness and pain. Trekkers can relish the sight of mountains on all sides as the trail traverses through small valleys.
There are two options to enter the Mustang region of Nepal from Tilicho Lake. They are using the Meso Kanta La Pass route and Thorong La Pass route. The trekking option of Meso Kanta La Pass is challenging and into the wilderness. There are no tea houses on this section. I recently completed the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek, and it was nothing short of spectacular! From start to finish, the experience exceeded all expectations.
The trek takes you through such a diverse range of landscapes—starting with lush forests, quaint villages, and terraced fields, and ascending to breathtaking alpine vistas surrounded by towering peaks. Every day offered something new and awe-inspiring.
The highlight, of course, was reaching the base camp itself at 4,130m. Standing amidst the majestic Annapurna range with the sunrise lighting up the peaks was an emotional and humbling experience. It felt like stepping into another world.
Our guides and porters were incredible—knowledgeable, friendly, and always ensuring we were safe and comfortable. They shared stories about the region, explained cultural nuances, and even taught us a few Nepali phrases. The teahouses along the trail were cozy, offering hearty meals, warm hospitality, and a chance to connect with fellow trekkers.
While the trek is challenging at times, especially with the uphill climbs and altitude, it’s entirely doable with proper preparation and pacing. I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for an adventure that combines natural beauty, cultural immersion, and a sense of personal achievement.
I’ll carry the memories of this trek with me forever and can’t wait to return to the Himalayas for another adventure. If you’re considering the Annapurna Base Camp trek—do it. You won’t regret it!
