The Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek in Nepal is probably the most interesting restricted trips to do in Nepal which is comparable with the commercial trekking routes of Nepal like the Everest Base Camp Trek!
The EBC Trek is the journey towards the base camp of the world’s tallest mountain Mt. Everest but the Manaslu Trek is all about visiting the Tsombos areas as well as reaching the base camp of the world’s 8th tallest mountain Mt. Manaslu (8163 m).
The Manaslu Trek starts from the Machha Khola Village located on the banks of the Budi Gandaki River. This is the trail head of the Manaslu Trekking activities either the Manaslu Circuit Trek or the Tsum Valley Trek. The road distance between Kathmandu and Machha Khola is about 160 kilometers.
The road section between Kathmandu and Aarughat is well maintained but the road section between Aarughat to Machha Khola via Aarkhet and Soti Khola is bumpy. It is completely an off – road adventure! Travelers have to drive along the shores of the Budi Gandaki River.
No, you don’t have to visit the Tsum Valley during the Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal. However, in the itinerary of the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek, you will have to explore both Tsum as well as places of the Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal.
You can reach the Manaslu Base Camp (4800 m) by walking about 4 to 5 hours from the Samagaon village via Birendra Lake. Nepal trekking requires lots of permits for trekking activities. The Manaslu region of Nepal requires the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit), MCAP (Manaslu Conservation Area Project Permit), and Special Restricted Area Permit issued by the immigration department of Nepal. The special restricted area permits costs 100 USD for 7 days and additional 15 $ per day extra if the trip extends beyond 7 days. This is the peak season permit cost for spring and autumn season but the winter and monsoon season permits costs 75 $ per person.
The best time to do the Manaslu Trek in Nepal is during the months of spring and autumn season. However, the cost of the permit is less during the winter and monsoon season but it is not highly recommended. If you are trekking in the trekking route of the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek then you may not be able to visit the Larke La Pass areas due to heavy rainfall. However, you can easily visit the Tsum Valley Trek during winter if you are traveling with the expert team of travel guides of the Mountain Watch Trek. I recently completed the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek, and it was nothing short of spectacular! From start to finish, the experience exceeded all expectations.
The trek takes you through such a diverse range of landscapes—starting with lush forests, quaint villages, and terraced fields, and ascending to breathtaking alpine vistas surrounded by towering peaks. Every day offered something new and awe-inspiring.
The highlight, of course, was reaching the base camp itself at 4,130m. Standing amidst the majestic Annapurna range with the sunrise lighting up the peaks was an emotional and humbling experience. It felt like stepping into another world.
Our guides and porters were incredible—knowledgeable, friendly, and always ensuring we were safe and comfortable. They shared stories about the region, explained cultural nuances, and even taught us a few Nepali phrases. The teahouses along the trail were cozy, offering hearty meals, warm hospitality, and a chance to connect with fellow trekkers.
While the trek is challenging at times, especially with the uphill climbs and altitude, it’s entirely doable with proper preparation and pacing. I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for an adventure that combines natural beauty, cultural immersion, and a sense of personal achievement.
I’ll carry the memories of this trek with me forever and can’t wait to return to the Himalayas for another adventure. If you’re considering the Annapurna Base Camp trek—do it. You won’t regret it!
