Reach the base camp of the world’s 8th tallest mountain Mt. Manaslu (8163 m). Meet the diverse communities of Nepal ranging from Lowland (Brahmins, Chhetris, Gurung, Dalits, & Magar) to Tsum community with traditional Tibetan culture! Moreover, relish the chance to cross a high-altitude mountain pass and rejoice in the fact that you are exploring Nepal’s two of the most popular trekking regions. They are Annapurna Region and Manaslu Region in one single trekking trip. The Manaslu Circuit Trek is probably the most popular restricted regions’ trekking routes of Nepal.
The trekking itinerary of Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal is usually 13 to 14 days. The number of days to complete the complete Manaslu Circuit Trek differs if you add Tsum Valley section as well. Some trekkers love to visit the mystical and mythical villages of Tsum region. In doing so the itinerary changes. The Mountain Watch Trek is a leading trekking agency of Nepal. Our travel planners are from the Manaslu region of Nepal having more than a decade of experiences in organizing trekking activities in the trekking route. Therefore, our itinerary is updated and easy to walk between two rest camps. Overnight places are strategically chosen in terms of walking distance, trail conditions, altitude differences, and possible scenery!
The trekking trail traverses through villages of Jagat, Deng, Namrung, and Shyala before reaching the famous Samagaon Village. This is the last densely populated village located in the Manaslu Circuit Trek route. Beyond this village, trekkers have to enter only after doing proper acclimatization rests and hikes. It is always risky to walk and sleep in the places that are located at an altitude more than 3500 m from sea level. Therefore, acclimatization is the best strategy to overcome any kinds of issues related to altitude sickness.
As a part of acclimatization hike, trekkers hike to Manaslu Base Camp (4800 m) via Birendra Lake. At the natural amphitheater the Birendra Lake is located beautifully. It is blue turquoise in color and offers astounding view of mountains. Trekking route to Manaslu Base Camp is challenging as we will have to walk on the ridge line over the snow at times. Spend a quality time at the base camp which is at an altitude of 4800 m. Upon reaching the high-altitude places, trekkers return back to Samagaon for overnight sleep. This is the basic formula of getting adjusted quickly to the high demand of Himalayan trekking in Nepal especially in the high-altitude places beyond 3500 m.
The crossing of Larke La Pass in Nepal is one of the joyous hikes to do in Nepal. The pass is long and offers great views of Annapurna Himalayan range, and Manaslu Mountain range. The scenery of cascading hills, river valleys, and glaciers seen from the top of the pass is splendid. On the other side of the pass, trekkers enter the Annapurna Conservation Area region and meet the Annapurna Circuit Trek route. Some adventure lovers prefer to continue the long journey of crossing Thorong La Pass too after crossing Larke La Pass.
Special Restricted Area Permit (SRAP) is mandatory to do trek in the region. Besides SRAP, trekkers must get Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP) permit and Manaslu Conservation Area (MCAP) permit. Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) permit is no longer in use.
There were few tea houses and lodges in this trekking route few years ago. However, popularity of Manaslu Circuit Trekking in Nepal is getting higher nowadays. Therefore, the construction of good tea houses and number of small eateries are also increased. You can find good lodging facilities with common bathroom. Trekkers are highly recommended to carry water purifying tablet as there are numerous natural water sources where you can simply fill up the bottle and drink. The cost of warm drinking water, hot showers, and charging of batteries is extra!
Solo trekking in Manaslu is strictly prohibited. In fact, you must be in a group of at least two trekkers to obtain special restricted area permit. This permit is issued by the immigration department of Nepal Government. Therefore, there is no exception in terms of the group size. The trekking trip must be guided by the Nepalese Government licensed trekking guide assigned by registered trekking agency based in Nepal.
Every trekking trip inside Nepal requires Travel Insurance. Therefore, you must have travel insurance to get permits to trek in Nepal. I recently completed the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek, and it was nothing short of spectacular! From start to finish, the experience exceeded all expectations.
The trek takes you through such a diverse range of landscapes—starting with lush forests, quaint villages, and terraced fields, and ascending to breathtaking alpine vistas surrounded by towering peaks. Every day offered something new and awe-inspiring.
The highlight, of course, was reaching the base camp itself at 4,130m. Standing amidst the majestic Annapurna range with the sunrise lighting up the peaks was an emotional and humbling experience. It felt like stepping into another world.
Our guides and porters were incredible—knowledgeable, friendly, and always ensuring we were safe and comfortable. They shared stories about the region, explained cultural nuances, and even taught us a few Nepali phrases. The teahouses along the trail were cozy, offering hearty meals, warm hospitality, and a chance to connect with fellow trekkers.
While the trek is challenging at times, especially with the uphill climbs and altitude, it’s entirely doable with proper preparation and pacing. I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for an adventure that combines natural beauty, cultural immersion, and a sense of personal achievement.
I’ll carry the memories of this trek with me forever and can’t wait to return to the Himalayas for another adventure. If you’re considering the Annapurna Base Camp trek—do it. You won’t regret it!
